The association between prokaryotes was an essential step during the emergence of the eukaryotic cell. Now we must recognize that the symbiotic associations with prokaryotes, explored during the eukaryotic diversification, play a major role in the evolution of eukaryotic metabolism. Eukaryotes are truly metabolic mosaics.
